So the real start of our gardens came in the fall of (I think) 1999, after we built a new garage. Since the old one was a single, and the new one a double, we got the opportunity to start from the ground up (ok, so it's a bad pun...). The sidewalks around the old garage went along with it, so we designed a whole new one that curved from the garage to the back door, giving us a great space in which to work. And, oh, what a mess it was! All torn up sod and clay - not much to work with.
But time, work and money can solve almost any garden problem. We added four yards each of manure and compost and dug it all in. The yard smelled SO nice! Fortunately for us, that dissipated quickly. Next we dug some pathways and lined them with stone, and put up a quick and dirty fence around what would become our veggie garden. And I mean quick and dirty! It was essentially green plastic snowfencing twist tied to metal stakes! Served its purpose, though, and kept the bunnies out for years.
Then came the fun. We got a bunch of perennials on sale (it was fall, after all) and put them in the ground. Then we covered them up and waited out the winter.
